Benjamin Bridge announces the release of 250-ml canned Piquette – another Canadian winemaking first
Now available by-the-glass on its new open-air wine terrace
Tuesday, June 23, 2020 (Gaspereau Valley, Nova Scotia) – Benjamin Bridge is thrilled to announce the release of its new Piquette wine refresher in can format for $5.49 per 250-ml. The product is available for direct purchase – online as well as in-person at the winery – and through its wine partners, in limited volume, across Canada. This new and innovative take on a historical French wine beverage is releasing alongside the second vintage of its hit Pet Nat in 250-ml format – another first of its kind for Canada.
Piquette is the name of a low-alcohol wine beverage made from the second pressings of grape pomace, known to have been enjoyed by farmhands and vineyard workers in France, thanks to its easy-drinking style and thirst-quenching qualities. In recent years, the style has enjoyed a grassroots renaissance due in part to its unprecedented ability to connect genuine artisan practices with a surprisingly attractive price previously out of reach for small boutique wineries.
As part of Benjamin Bridge’s ongoing sustainability efforts, the true beauty of its canned Piquette is that it unites low-intervention craftsmanship and affordability by relying on the act of reducing grape waste. This is further supported by an infinitely recyclable aluminum container significantly reducing the carbon footprint. Its head winemaker and lead innovator, Jean-Benoit Deslauriers, describes more about his artisan creation:
Our own take and twist on the style has been made with the objective to reinvigorate. For optimal refreshment, we reached out to our friends at the Annapolis Salt Company to add a pinch of hand made salt flakes from the Bay of Fundy. Finally, to make our Piquette extra succulent, we finished it with a delicate touch of organic Citra hops and packed an energizing jolt of fizz to create the zestiest wine refresher.
This new product was made possible thanks to the incredible support of the Annapolis Valley Chamber of Commerce, who awarded Benjamin Bridge its Accelerator Award through a competitive process that provided $10,000 in support of the product’s commercialization.
Alongside its acclaimed sparklings and specialized wine portfolio, Piquette is a by-the-glass offering on Benjamin Bridge’s new open-air wine terrace in the Gaspereau Valley, which opened on Saturday, June 20. Benjamin Bridge’s head of hospitality, Brittany Parker, shares this on the culmination of the winery’s 12-month renovation:
I’ve watched in awe as local artisans have renovated our winery into a beautiful multi-purpose space with a barrel fermentation room alongside private tasting rooms, a wine shop, and numerous exterior sitting areas, including our centrepiece – the new wine terrace. Our special spot, on the south-facing slopes of the heart of the Gaspereau Valley, is now available for Nova Scotians (and hopefully soon, more Atlantic Canadians) to visit for safe and comfortable sipping this season. We invite you to enjoy our warm and unhurried hospitality.
Benjamin Bridge winery is located at 1966 White Rock Road, Gaspereau Valley, and welcomes all guests, including families, to its estate — bring along a picnic and take a vineyard stroll, relax on the terrace and enjoy artisan wines and complimentary bites, and browse through the airy new wine shop. Open seven days per week from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with by-the-glass walk-ins welcome, and guided tastings available by appointment. More details available at benjaminbridge.com/visit.
