When Benjamin Bridge was founded as a sparkling wine house back in 1999, the notion of specializing on stylistic pursuits that fundamentally aligned with our unique micro-climate was immediately built into its DNA. To this day, such focus remains a guiding principle, and defines a precise portfolio of wines centered around traditional method sparkling. However, in select vintages, a rare, boutique-size production of red wine emerges, providing grounds for exploration while adding a touch of diversity.
From the inclusion of estate grown certified organic fruit, to wild spontaneous alcoholic and malolactic fermentations, the 2016 Taurus embraces the natural practices and low interventionism characteristic of all recent vintages at Benjamin Bridge. A blend of 40% Marquette, 33% Foch and 27% Frontenac, it is also the swan song of our Organic Estate Marechal Foch; the last specimen from this parcel behind every single Taurus bottling since its inception in 2004. One of the best vintages in recent memory, 2016 featured a growing season with ideal ripening circumstances for red varieties and the emergence of full bodied reds. The result was a generous and substantial wine, featuring a tightly bound structure reminiscent of traditionally warmer climates.
“In the glass, a deep purple colour with a magenta hue. On the nose, a wild bouquet of forest floor, botanical herbs and lavender is enhanced by hints of warm raspberry liqueur. On the palate, expressive notes of black cherries, cinnamon and black pepper are complicated by suggestions of candied anise and smoked game. A highly tonic finish lingers with interlaced spicy and sappy fruit layers. A wine with great depth and substance.”Head winemaker Jean-Benoit Deslauriers
